People in Maritime

Terms of use

The ground rules

People in Maritime is a place to meet the people behind the industry, not a place to sell to them. These terms keep it that way. By creating an account, you agree to them.

Last updated 24 September 2026 · Pilot version

The short version

  • This is a pilot, provided as it is.
  • Be respectful, and honest about who you are.
  • No selling, spam or scraping.
  • You own what you write.
  • We can remove accounts that abuse the service or other people.

About these terms

These terms are an agreement between you and People in Maritime ("we" and "us") about using the People in Maritime website and app. Our privacy notice explains how we handle your information and forms part of these terms.

If you have a question about them, email [email protected].

A pilot, provided as it is

People in Maritime is an early pilot, built to find out whether maritime professionals find it useful. That means:

  • Features may change, appear or disappear as we learn what works.
  • The service is provided "as is" and "as available". We work hard to keep it running and your information safe, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors.
  • We may pause or end the pilot. If we do, we will tell you by email first wherever we can.
  • The basic professional experience is free.

Your account

  • Use your real name and describe yourself honestly. This is a network of real people who meet in person.
  • One account per person, for your own use.
  • Keep your password and passkeys safe. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
  • If you think someone else has got into your account, tell us straight away at [email protected].

Be respectful

Treat people here as you would at a professional event. Do not:

  • harass, threaten, bully or discriminate against anyone;
  • pretend to be someone else, or misrepresent your role or organisation;
  • post anything unlawful, defamatory or obscene, or anything that infringes someone else's rights;
  • keep contacting someone who has not accepted your connection request, or who has asked you to stop.

Nobody is ever obliged to connect, reply or meet. What someone is "open to" is an invitation, not a promise.

Not a sales directory

People come here to meet peers, not to be sold to. So:

  • No selling. Do not use connections or messages to sell, pitch or advertise to people who have not asked.
  • No spam. No bulk messages, chain messages or copy-and-paste outreach.
  • No scraping. Do not collect members' details or attendee lists to build lists or databases, whether by hand or with scripts, bots or scrapers. Search engines indexing public pages is fine.
  • No tampering. Do not try to break, overload or get around the security of the service.

What you write is yours

You own your profile, your notes and your messages. By adding them, you give us permission to store them and show them to the people you have chosen, only so that we can run the service. That permission ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from copies in backups that expire in the normal way.

Your private notes about people you meet are for you alone. We do not show them to anyone else.

Removing content and accounts

We can remove content, or suspend or close an account, if it breaks these terms, puts other people at risk or harms the service. Where it is safe and sensible, we will tell you why. If you think we have got it wrong, email us.

Leaving

You can stop using People in Maritime at any time, and delete your account from settings. Deleting your account removes your profile, notes, connections and messages. Other people keep their own records of meeting you, with your name and profile removed.

Our responsibility to you

We provide the service with reasonable care and skill. Because it is a free pilot, to the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for indirect losses, lost business or lost opportunities, or for what other members say or do, on or off the platform. Meetings you arrange through People in Maritime are between you and the other person.

Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Nothing in them affects your statutory rights.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the pilot develops. We will change the date at the top, and if the change is significant, we will email you before it applies. If you keep using the service after that, the new terms apply.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by UK law. If something goes wrong, please talk to us first; most things can be sorted out with an email. If not, the courts of the part of the UK where you live can deal with it.
